ABSTRACT: This study investigates the role of vocational education initiatives in addressing the skills gap, focusing on their effectiveness in bridging the gap between education and industry needs. The objectives were to (1) identify key skills gaps in the current workforce, (2) evaluate the effectiveness of vocational education initiatives in addressing these gaps, and (3) propose strategies to enhance the alignment of vocational training with industry demands. A survey design was chosen to collect data from students, educators, and industry professionals, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of skills gaps and vocational training effectiveness. The sample size included 220 participants, selected through a purposive sampling technique to include those directly involved in vocational education and industry. The case study was conducted in Rivers State, Nigeria, an area with significant industrial activity. Findings indicated that vocational education initiatives were effective in addressing specific skills gaps by providing targeted training and industry-aligned curricula. However, challenges such as limited industry collaboration and outdated training methods were noted. Recommendations included enhancing industry partnerships, continuously updating curricula to reflect industry changes, and providing ongoing professional development for educators to ensure vocational training remains relevant and effective in addressing the skills gap.
